Friday Feature: Kayla Williams

My name is Kayla Williams and I am a chorus teacher and middle school cheerleading coach in Pendleton, SC, where my husband is the OC and pitching coach at Pendleton High School. My husband and I met through him coaching my brother in baseball one summer. (The moms and players did a joint effort in setting us up, and he asked me on our first date in front of all of them!) That was 13 years and many seasons of high school football and baseball ago. My husband is a 3rd generation coach, so it’s engrained in him and his family. And I have two incredible women/former coaches' wives to look to who modeled this lifestyle! We have two kids, Jake and JP, who love tagging along with Daddy as much as they can.

What is your favorite part of this lifestyle?

  • The family of dozens of teenage boys we make each season. These boys love my family and treat my boys like blood. My boys never feel like an accessory to this lifestyle- but an integral part of the team and their love for each other.
What is your LEAST favorite part of this lifestyle?
  • The misconceptions about my husband's time and job importance. Sometimes people outside of this lifestyle don’t understand the sacrifices made. On a very specific note, I also HATE getting the boys out of the car after a late game, lugging them up the steps, and getting them in bed after a long day of being the “single” mamma!
What is one item you can't live without that makes this life easier?
  • I have a massive bag that holds the essentials- stadium seat, wipes, snacks, coloring books, toy trucks. It stays in the back of my car always.
What is your go to concession stand order or must have snack?
  • We often raid the QT Roller Bar on our way to away games!
What is the craziest thing you have survived due to this lifestyle?
  • My first night home from the hospital with our second son. It was a Friday night. We got home and hubs turned around and left for a game. Enduring that first night with a newborn and 4 year old alone was… interesting!
What is one thing you would go back and tell your younger self?
  • Loving your hubby means loving this lifestyle. Yes, time is limited, but the special blessings from being a coach’s wife outweigh the setbacks!
