Friday Feature: Jan Bahlmann

My name is Jan. My husband is the Head Football Coach at Marshall High School in Marshall, Minnesota. He will be in year 41 as a head coach- 21 years in Minnesota, and 20 years in Iowa. We have 3 grown children- 2 daughters, and 1 son (who is his dad’s DC). All 3 are educators- 2 teachers and 1 Special Ed Director. We also have 4 grandchildren. We are definitely a football family! Proud moments of 2023 were my husband being inducted into 2 states Hall of Fame, Iowa and Minnesota!

What is your favorite part of this lifestyle?

  • The team concept which embodies not just the players, but parents as well. We are at the end of his career (not retiring just yet!) but can honestly say, through all the ups and downs, as there are both, I will miss every part of football.
What is your LEAST favorite part of this lifestyle?
  • Not sure I have a least favorite part. I’m sure when the kids were younger, but it’s just a lifestyle that we embraced.
What is one item you can't live without that makes this life easier?
  • GPS in my car to get me to games!
What is your go to concession stand order or must have snack?
  • Popcorn.
What is the craziest thing you have survived due to this lifestyle?
  • Trying to balance my kids as 4 sport athletes in HS, while my husband (at that time) was HC of 2 varsity sports with no family nearby to help. I was working full time as well.
What is one thing you would go back and tell your younger self?
  • Be patient with the process. Engulf your family into this lifestyle and communicate your needs. It’s not always easy, but it is worth it! My husband has always included me as part of all his success and will tell anyone "To be a good coach, you need a good coaches wife!"
