During times of crisis- tornadoes, hurricanes, many people run to the store for bread, milk, and water, among other things. The "rule of 3" is that we can survive 3 minutes without oxygen, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food- but who wants to just survive?
As we know from living life in the sports world, without consistent, intentional intake of water, there is always the danger of physical dehydration. Without consistent, intentional intake of God's Word, there is the danger of spiritual dehydration as well.
We are born spiritually thirsty, and Jesus says, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'
"Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified." John 7:37-39
Physically speaking, water cleanses our impurities, relieves fatigue, supports our immune systems, and can even improve our moods. Spiritually speaking, the Lord cleanses us from sin, strengthens us, encourages us through sadness and disappointments, and His Word is our sword against the evil one, supporting our spiritual immune systems.
This is not about doing, feeling, and thinking Christian thoughts. We are not talking about changing our behavior, we are talking about God transforming us from the inside out. Conditioning us through challenging seasons. Scripture confirms over and again the human need to rest and renew, and as we drink the living water of His Word and seek Him through the struggles, we can find new perspective, cleansing of sin, strength, joy, and heart transformation.
